List of boxing events at London 2012 Olympics

Male Olympic boxers will battle in 10 weight classes, from light flyweight to super-heavyweight, while female boxers will challenge three weight divisions as flyweight, lightweight, middleweight. The male bouts are contested over three 3-minute rounds – compared to specialized fights which last 12 rounds. Female bouts take place over four 2-minute rounds.

The fighter who knocks out their challenger or scores the most points wins. Boxers score one point for every punch they land with the noticeable part of their glove on their opponent’s head or upper body. Any boxer who moves more than 12 points ahead of a challenger automatically wins. This method differs from professional boxing where points are awarded based on each boxer’s overall performance in a round, not for each individual successful punch.

Each boxer is labeled red or blue. This is also the colour of the clothing they wear to fight. All fighters must also wear protective headgear, a key variation from the professional bouts.

Another champion retired form Boxing:Antonio Margarito

Earlier past champions Winky Wright and “Sugar” Shane Mosley, both 40-years-old, announced their retirements from boxing. And former welterweight champion Antonio Margarito, 34, joined the pack and discovered that he plans to walk away from the ring.

Margarito has never been the same after taking a twelve round beating from Manny Pacquiao in the fall of 2010. During the action, he suffered a broken orbital bone and undergo more than a few surgical procedures to correct the injure to his right eye.

There were many hurdles to get him medically approved to face Miguel Cotto in a rematch last December at Madison Square Garden in New York. Within a few rounds, the right eye began to swell at a rapid pace and the ringside physician finally stopped the fight because of the eye in the tenth round.

Margarito will always be regarded as a tough challenger, but there will always be debate when experts discuss his legacy because of the handwraps incident prior to his 2009 TKO loss to Shane Mosley in California. Prior to the fight, inserts containing a plaster-like substance were discovered in his wraps. The California State Atheltic Commission would later cancel his license for one year.

Great Boxing player Winky Wright retires

After taking three years off from the sport and a knee surgery, St Petersburg’s Winky Wright fights his last match of his storied career in Carson, California. 2012 London Olympics:Nine fighters qualify from USA for Boxing

The United States 2012 Olympic boxing team has a strong nine team members, making it one of the biggest squads at the London games. Australia leads the pack with a full 10 boxers, and Kazakhstan is tied with the USA at nine. The USA will then be represented in all but one weight class, Light Flyweight. Three US boxers were already qualified for the Olympics. The remaining six team members had to qualify at the current Americas Qualifier competition in Ro de Janeiro, Brazil.

With nine boxers getting to battle, one would think the team has an opportunity at a great development over their disappointing showing in 2008. In Beijing, previously unheralded Deontay Wilder won the team’s only medal, a bronze, saving the United States from the complete humiliation of a medal shutout. The United States Olympic boxing team is led by Flyweight Rau’shee Warren, a 2007 World Champion. Warren will be the first US boxer to compete in three Olympic Games.

Team captain Jamel Herring will battle at Light Welterweight. He’s a US Marine Corps Sergeant, and a two-time Armed Forces National Champion. He also took home silver at the 2010 World Military Championships. Bantamweight Joseph Diaz Jr. is 19 years old, but already has huge international experience. He lost at the 2011 Worlds to Cuba’s gold-medal winning Lazaro Alvarez Estrada, making him a potential medal winner at London. Welterweight Errol Spence is a three-time US National Champion.
