Boxing: Sutherland promises Manchester ‘fireworks’

BEIJING Olympics bronze medallist Darren Sutherland will make his next pro appearance at the Robin Park Arena in Manchester on March 6 against an opponent yet to be named.

The Dublin super-middleweight (26), who is trained in London by Frank Maloney, made an explosive debut at the Helix in December when he finished off Bulgaria’s Georgi Iliev in two minutes and 44 seconds.

“I want to deliver more fireworks next time,” Sutherland said yesterday. “I’m training with Dean Francis, the reigning Commonwealth lightheavyweight champion, and he’s keeping me on my toes.”

The card will be headed by the vacant European lightmiddleweight title fight between Irish champion Jamie Moore and Italy’s former world title-holder Michele Piccirillo.
