Ivan Calderon Beat Rodel Mayol
For the 2nd time in the past four months, a clash between unbeatable World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon and his number no1 candidate Rodel Mayol has ended by a technological decision due to a head clash. This time the bout finished in the 7th round instead of the 6th like last time in June 2009 with Calderon, 34, once again cut from a head clash at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Calderon was in front at the time of the strike on two of the judge’s scorecards, 68-65 and 68-65, while on the third judges’ scorecard, Mayol was lined to be ahead by the scores of 68-65.
Like previous time, the taller 5′4″ took the clash to the shorter 5′0″ Calderon, and just as before, Calderon was clever to take gain of Mayol’s offensive violence by hitting him with a lot of counter shots to the head and body. Last time, I thought that Mayol was in front at the time the clash ended in the 6th round, but this time, I thought that Calderon had won the vast bulk of the rounds with his bright counter punch and deserved to get the win.
What I didn’t like about this clash was that Calderon kept diving in with his head first like a Billy goat when he would made effort to clinch or land punches on the inside. Calderon didn’t use to clash this way, but as moving up against taller boxer like Mayol and Hugo Fidel Cazares in the past couple of years, Calderon has twisted into a small Billy goat with his use of the head.
It makes it annoying to watch him fight nowadays because Calderon’s last three fights have all been stopped up due to cuts from head clash. Calderon is forever the one badly cut, but then again he’s the one that is coming in head first like a little goat. I predict that the replay between Mayol and Calderon would end on a head clash and it looks as if I was correct.
